AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (1.00 hours), Non-Physician Attendance (1.00 hours)

BeHIP training provides pediatric healthcare providers with tools and strategies to screen for, assess, and manage patients with emotional, behavioral, and/or substance abuse concerns. It also encompasses strategies to provide for more efficient workflow (including information on coding), more effective care, and improved family and physician relationships.

These online training modules take participants through six different case studies each involving a child with behavioral health or substance abuse concerns. Each case has a corresponding screening tool which is reviewed. The participants work through the already completed screening tool to become familiar with the tool and calculate a score. The screening tools addressed in the BeHIP training are:

  • Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Screen (EPDS)
  • Ages and Stages Questionnaire - Social Emotional (ASQ-SE)
  • Pediatric Symptom Checklist  (PSC-17)
  • Screen for Anxiety Related Disorders (SCARED)
  • Modified Patient Health Questionnaire ( PHQ-9)
  • Global Appraisal of Individual Needs Short Screener (GAIN-SS)

Participants and facilitators walk through the “Common Factors and Common Elements” approach to addressing each behavioral health concern. These skills teach primary care providers specific communication skills that are appropriate when treating and managing a behavioral health or substance abuse issue.  Each case is followed up with specific behavioral health resources that can be utilized. The BeHIP program also encompasses strategies to provide for more efficient workflow, including information on documentation and coding. The American Academy of Pediatrics 2009 Policy statement “The Future of Pediatrics: Mental Health Competencies for Pediatric Primary Care” is the basis for the training curriculum. Additional content was adapted from the AAP Mental Health Toolkit.
