During the Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) Journal Club, attendings and fellows review recently published clinical articles in PHM with a focus on examining the quality of the evidence and determining the applicability of the findings to clinical practice. After participating in the journal club, they should be able to continue to develop their capabilities to evaluate the quality of the studies reported in articles reviewed in terms of research design, statistical techniques used, reliability and validity, and the presence of confounding variables and bias, the quality of evidence for the recommendations in the reviewed articles, and the relevance of the findings of the studies for practice.

Objectives
After participation in this educational activity, you should be able to:

  1. Review current practice to identify opportunities for improvement based on individual, practice, and system factors
  2. Identify opportunities for improvement by discussing individual, practice, and system factors contributing to complications, medical errors, and sub-optimal outcomes
  3. Critically analyze recent advances in care of pediatric patients for application to the case being reviewed
  4. Recommend strategies to address opportunities for improvement aimed at reducing medical errors, complications, and sub-optimal outcomes

Vanderbilt University Medical Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
