The purpose of this course is to prepare all healthcare professionals who prescribe controlled prescription drugs to follow all required state and national prescribing guidelines. This 3-day professional development course offers a variety of interactive training activities to promote proper prescribing practices. Major content includes substances of abuse from the DEA, the opioid epidemic, Tennessee Chronic Pain Guidelines, clinical practice guidelines on managing acute and chronic pain, SBIRT and other screening tools for SU and SUD, practice improvement strategies to implement for personal and office-based prescribing practices to reduce risk of misprescribing and board sanctioning. Participants will engage in individual reflection, paired activities, and group discussion to enhance learning and support behavior change. They also focuses on the doctor-patient relationship, identification of SUD, management, and various resources for patients with SUD and healthcare professionals in recovery. Participants required to complete a board approved prescribing course can participate in this course. This course includes content specific to TN as well as other states and national guidelines.


Objectives
After participating in this educational activity, you should be able to:

  1. Discuss evidence of the opioid epidemic and challenges with safe prescribing of CPDs.
  2. Describe and discuss current information on proper prescribing practices of controlled substances, substance use and misuse, and clinical practice guidelines.
  3. Apply SBIRT and MI in clinical practice scenarios.
  4. Identify individual risk behaviors associated with misprescribing practices and compare and contrast the 10 misprescribing practices of providers
  5. Effectively identify, refer and/or manage the care of patients with pain and substance use.
