Specialties - Anesthesiology, Cardiac Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Medicine, Nursing, Other, Thoracic Surgery

AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (5.75 hours), Non-Physician Attendance (5.75 hours)

This course is designed for clinicians caring for adult ECMO patients in the VUMC adult hospital. It offers a practical, up-to-date review of ECMO care for both cardiac and respiratory failure, with emphasis on bedside recognition, clinical decision-making, and management of ECMO-supported patients. Participants will review patient selection, indications, circuit physiology, cannulation strategies, common ECMO configurations, and management considerations for key clinical scenarios including cardiogenic shock, ARDS, pulmonary hypertension, lung transplantation, ECPR, left ventricular venting, and liberation from VA ECMO. The course includes didactic instruction from institutional experts followed by hands-on, interactive simulation. The simulation component is designed to strengthen practical bedside assessment, team-based communication, and management decisions for patients supported with ECMO.

Objectives
After participating in this educational activity, you should be able to:

  1. Review common indications for ECMO in adult patients with severe cardiac and respiratory failure.
  2. Describe basic ECMO circuit physiology, common configurations, and high-level cannulation strategies.
  3. Recognize key bedside management considerations for adult patients supported with ECMO.
  4. Apply clinical decision-making principles to common ECMO scenarios through interactive case discussion and simulation.
  5. Identify early concerns and complications in ECMO-supported patients that warrant escalation or further evaluation
