The pediatric hospital medicine division has nearly 4,000 patient admissions each year and takes care of a wide variety of patients, including an increasingly medically complex population. Because of the nature of our work, we collaborate frequently with other specialities, and often share patients with the ER, NICU, PICU and surgical services. Because of the high-volume of our complex patient service and our close relationship with the pediatric residents, we are often aware of--and frequently involved in--cases where significant morbidity or a near miss has occurred. Unfortunately, due to our scheduling (including frequent night shifts, off-site work, and administrative obligations, we are not always able to attend the hospital wide MM&I conference. This conference would allow us to review and discuss cases that are pertinent to the hospital medicine service and occur at a time that would maximize the attendance of our section.


Objectives
After participation in this educational activity, you should be able to:

  1. Review current practice to identify opportunities for improvement based on individual, practice, and system factors
  2. Identify opportunities for improvement by discussing individual, practice, and system factors contributing to complications, medical errors, and sub-optimal outcomes. Prove Patient Care processes and clinical outcomes
  3. Implement strategies to address opportunities for improvement aimed at reducing medical errors, complications, and sub-optimal outcomes
