Overview of proper prescribing of controlled substances including: - review of chronic pain guidelines with consideration of TN Together laws and 2022 CDC opioid guidelines - recommendations on naloxone prescribing and use - discussions regarding opioid disposal - acute pain management for patients with opioid use disorder (OUD), chronic pain including non-opioid alternatives for acute pain management


ACCME Objectives
  1. Understand Tennessee Chronic Pain Guidelines for Pain Management and Opioid Prescribing
  2. Recognize signs and symptoms of opioid use disorder
  3. Apply evidence-based practice recommendations to safely taper opioid medications
  4. Discuss Tennessee state law regulations on opioid and naloxone prescribing
  5. Develop a multimodal pain management plan of care

ANCC Learning Outcomes
  1. After participating in this activity, learners who complete an evaluation will self-report an increase in knowledge regarding proper prescribing of controlled substances including review of current state and national guidelines, proper prescribing and use of naloxone, and acute pain management for patients with substance use disorder and/or chronic pain.
