“From Chalk Talks to Chat Bots: Teaching Effectively, Ethically, and Critically for the AI Age.” Workshop facilitated by Yaa Kumah-Crystal, Shane Stenner, and Chase Webber Seminar Overview: The goal of this workshop is to provide faculty with skills and resources to enhance learner engagement, self-assessment, and near-peer teaching by practically and ethically integrating AI-powered tools into their teaching. The rapid growth of artificial intelligence and generative technological tools promises to transform the learning and teaching experience. But with great promise comes potential peril…and a healthy dose of hype. Given the emergence, evolution, and widespread uptake of mainstream accessible AI tools, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, educators in all settings share understandable concerns regarding the implications of these technologies upon the learning environment. This session targets the development of a learning-theory grounded approach to help academic medical center professionals, including clinicians, educators, and interdisciplinary teams, promote an effective, ethical, and critically reflective practice, by teaching and working with (rather than against) AI. Seminar Highlights: Participants will engage in interactive exercises, discussions, and reflection in order to: • Gain an understanding of the foundational terms, components, and paradigms that make up the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence. • Describe the state of AI integration across the continuum of medical education and the science of learning • Compare and contrast distinctive human skills with AI capabilities and recommend learning-theory driven modifications to existing curricula (e.g., Bloom’s Taxonomy Revisited). • Describe the risks (ethical and human), benefits (learner and team), and potential future directions (how to apply it) of integrating AI-powered tools into classroom and clinical teaching. • Practice a theory grounded approach to frequently encountered challenges in education by using case studies and prompts.

Objectives
After participating in this educational activity, you should be able to:

  1. Gain an understanding of the foundational terms, components, and paradigms that make up the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.

  3. Compare and contrast distinctive human skills with AI capabilities and recommend learning-theory driven modifications to existing curricula (e.g., Bloom’s Taxonomy Revisited).
  4. Describe the risks (ethical and human), benefits (learner and team), and potential future directions (how to apply it) of integrating AI-powered tools into classroom and clinical teaching.
  5. Practice a theory grounded approach to frequently encountered challenges in education by using case studies and prompts.
