The series consists of 6 online workshops which are a mix of didactic content, role play, and reflection designed to give trainees the skills needed to facilitate conversations around health equity. For example, if a pulmonologist wants to include data on disparities in health outcomes by race in a Grand Rounds on asthma, they would have the skills needed to describe the equity issue and suggest areas for improvement based on current research. Or if a patient is concerned that he is getting lower quality care based on his race during rounds. This course would give an attending educator the skills needed to address the patient’s concern in real time and facilitate a conversation among trainees on the team to reflect on this. The sessions will be held from 11 am – 1pm during February and March of 2024. The sessions will be coordinated by Drs. Lourdes Estrada (PhD) and Rohini Chakravarthy (MD/MBA), faculty of the Office of Health Equity. Shana Alford will be supporting the assessment and evaluation component of the course. The project will be overseen by Dr. Consuelo Wilkins, Director of the Office of Health Equity. The content will be delivered by The Collective AIM, a non-profit organization that conducts educational workshops across the country. The topics of the workshops are (1) Antiracism in Medicine, (2) Racial Identity Development, (3) Foundations of Facilitation, (4) Addressing Challenges of Facilitation, and (5) Facilitation Implementation and Reflection. The program's goal is to equip participants with these skills which can be shared with other VUMC faculty.
