The Epilepsy Journal Club is offered monthly on the 4th Friday in the Sloan Conference Room in Medical Center North from 12:00 to 1:00 pm. When Neurology MMI is offered (March, June, September, December), journal club is offered after MMI from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. Opportunities to review and critique recent research articles covering topics on the evaluation and management of patients with epilepsy. During the Epilepsy Journal Club, participants review recently published clinical articles in epilepsy with a focus on examining the quality of the evidence and determining the applicability of the findings to clinical practice. After participating in the journal club, they should be able to continue to develop their capabilities to evaluate the quality of the studies reported in articles reviewed in terms of research design, statistical techniques used, reliability and validity, and the presence of confounding variables and bias, the quality of evidence for the recommendations in the reviewed articles, and the relevance of the findings of the studies for practice. Reading journals is one of the important methods for neurologists to keep up-to-date with evolving evidence that helps them provide the best possible care to their patients with epilepsy.


Objectives
After participating in this educational activity, you should be able to:

  1. evaluate the quality of the studies reported in articles reviewed in terms of research design, statistical techniques used, reliability and validity, and the presence of confounding variables and bias
  2. assess the quality of evidence supporting recommendations for novel approaches to evaluating and managing patients with epilepsy
  3. understand the relevance of the findings of the studies for practice
