This 3-day course will prepare healthcare leaders in departments, divisions and training programs to identify and address sources of burnout, stress, and impaired behaviors. Leaders will be given opportunities to learn how to identify approaches to create a climate of wellness in their areas of responsibility as well as identify strategies for improving their personal wellness. The course is designed for leaders in medicine, dentistry, nursing, and pharmacy and will be offered July 16-18, 2025, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm in-person and/or via Teams. During the course, participants will engage in an interactive learning experience directed at addressing wellness, resilience, stress, burnout, and impaired behavior, as well as leadership roles and strategies for creating a personal approach to wellness as well as a culture of wellness in the workplace. Participants will engage in discussions and planning for addressing source of burnout within their system/organization. Other topics that will be covered in the interactive sessions include topics such as mindfulness, positive psychology, goal setting, and happiness. Overall, the program takes participants through an individual self-reflective approach to an organizational approach to reduce burnout. Participants will learn techniques that promote wellness, joy in the job, and purpose as they embark on a journey of self-discovery to align core missions and dreams with current work and family roles. They will practice relaxation and mindfulness-based stress reduction, effective communication strategies and conflict management techniques. Participants will also write personal and work-related wellness goals, and plan follow-up activities and research projects to study the effect of improved workplace cultures and wellness within their organization.


Objectives
After participating in this educational activity, you should be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast various conceptual models related to burnout, professionalism and professional health
  2. Describe the four (4) zones of the professional health and wellness spectrum.
  3. List sources, individual risk factors, symptoms and consequences of burnout.
  4. Describe the four (4) strategies of enhancing resilience and develop a plan to enhance resilience
  5. Identify areas of personal change and design a personal wellness plan by writing B-A-SMART-ER™ goals to implement and complete within the next six months.
  6. Use cases to practice identifying individual sources and solutions for burnout
  7. List and describe types of conflict management.
  8. List factors to address from the individual and organizational approach to combating burnout
  9. Compare and contrast estimate costs for replacing burned out/distressed physicians and nurses and costs for implementing plausible wellness initiatives.
  10. Identify and select measures to assess prior to and after implementation to assess success of the program/process.
