The Residents as Teachers and Leaders (RATL) program is a blended learning program consisting of four, on-line, self-guided learning module in collaboration with a hands-on skill building workshop. The focus is on clinical teaching skills and knowledge for students, residents and faculty to gain knowledge and skills in teaching learners in the clinical setting. All teachers may benefit from learning how to use educational theory and clinical teaching models to improve their clinic teaching skills in the clinic, hospital, emergency room and operating room. This program allows participants to gain valuable knowledge and the practice in a safe learning environment to improve skills with feedback. The RATL program is available for all clinical departments at Vanderbilt. Sessions (1-hr or 2-hr workshops) may be requested through the EDP medical education consult request form and are scheduled according to department needs and timeline. The program provides flexible learning and is fun to complete.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to describe and discuss:

  1. 1. How to use strategies based on research in the learning sciences to help medical students learn in the clinical setting
  2. 2. How to use formative assessment techniques to help medical student progress through the curriculum
  3. 3. How to determine if a medical has accomplished the goals and objectives of a learning activity in the curriculum
  4. 4. How to provide mentoring services to medical student to help them succeed in medical school.


Vanderbilt University Medical Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
