The course is designed to help clinicians who have had problems associated with prescribing controlled substances improve their prescribing practices. After participating in Prescribing Controlled Substances, you should be able to describe and discuss current information on proper prescribing practices of controlled substances, how to recognize risky prescribing of controlled substances, strategies to avoid inappropriate prescribing behaviors, strategies for managing the drug-seeking patient, an approach to managing chemical dependency using SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral for Treatment), and how to access your state’s prescription drug monitoring program.


Objectives

After participating in this CME activity, participants should be able to describe and discuss:


  1. current information on proper prescribing practices of controlled substance
  2. how to recognize risky prescribing of controlled substances
  3. strategies to avoid inappropriate prescribing behaviors
  4. strategies for managing the drug-seeking patient
  5. an approach to managing chemical dependency using SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral for Treatment)
  6. how to access your state’s prescription drug monitoring program
