AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (1.50 hours), Non-Physician Attendance (1.50 hours)

A hour and a half session on Addressing Microaggressions in Medical Education will be offered on the Zoom platform on October 21, 2020 from 8:00 to 9:00 am. Microaggressions are identified as brief, commonplace indignities that disrespect persons based on their race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religious practice, and/or disability. This workshop aims to enhance the professional development of medical educators by teaching methods of identifying and preventing microaggressions as well as supporting learners experiencing such affronts. This instruction will promote diversity and safe learning environments in medical education. The eight faculty presenting this workshop come from seven different academic institutions from across the United States and represent a diversity of experience and thought on the subject. The one-hour session is designed as follows: 1. Introduction to Microaggressions (5 minutes) 2. Workshop faculty will demonstrate an example of a microaggression in the clinical realm via role play. 3. Didactics (25 minutes) - Two PowerPoint didactics will: • define types of microaggressions • expand the original concept of racial microaggressions to other minority groups • identify sources of microaggressions against medical students • create a conceptualization of microaggressions for attendees • provide a rubric (V.I.T.A.L.S.) to identify, process, and address microaggressions. • describe other tips to respond to microaggressions 4. Experiential Session (25 minutes) • Attendees broken into small group Zoom breakout rooms, each facilitated by a workshop leader. • Attendees will review 2-3 clinical vignettes of microaggressions, then discuss strategies to address the insult in each case using the rubric presented in the didactic. 5. Conclusion (5 minutes) 6. Faculty/attendees will reconvene in the larger Zoom room and reflect on the session, ask/answer questions, and confirm action plans.
