“Harnessing Emotional Intelligence to Thrive in the New Normal” presented by Shayna D. Humphrey, M.Ed., Adjunct Professor, Owen Graduate School of Management Seminar Overview: The pandemic has brought a paradigm shift to the world of work. Without question intellectual preparation and knowledge-based competence are fundamental requirements of professional success. But when contending with a global-to-local crisis and the seemingly endless line of dominoes falling in response, we look to those who also can succeed in what some may call the greatest test of emotional intelligence in a generation. These are the professionals who lead —formally or by example— by first managing themselves effectively through adversity as a foundational step to being able to collaborate with and lead others successfully. Given the call for effective leaders to emerge, this session targets the development of certain Emotional Intelligence (EI) skills that help medical professionals, including clinicians, educators, and staff, navigate uncertainty, manage emotional reactivity, and reduce the negative consequences of high-level stress so that collaboration and innovation may flourish. Armed with two specific EI skills, Self-awareness and Self-regulation, prepared professionals can build the resilience needed not to simply weather but to thrive in the face of challenging and changing circumstances. Seminar Highlights: Participants will engage in interactive exercises, discussions, and introspection in order to: • Identify the five core elements of Emotional Intelligence with a particular emphasis on the intrapersonal skills of Self-awareness and Self-regulation. • Examine personal “hot buttons” and reactions. • Practice Systematic Rationalization, a cognitive behavioral technique, to better manage the stress response and maintain poise in difficult situations and/or conversations. • Explore the development of Empathy, the most important factor for creating psychological safety and encouraging positive, collaborative relationships and creative problem-solving.
