This course is available to VUMC employees only. 

Course designed for physicians seeing patients who require opioids in the care of their acute and chronic pain. This module will assist providers to identify problematic opioid use while providing guidance in proper pain treatment regimens. Also included is a screening process for opioid use disorder and instructions on how to refer those patients for further treatment.

Effective July 1, 2014, all prescribers who hold a current DEA license and who prescribe controlled substances are required by the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners to complete a minimum of two hours of prescribing CME credit. A total of forty (40) CME credits are required for physician re-licensure. All credits must be earned in the two years prior to renewal. This course satisfies one of the State's two prescribing CME credit requirements.



Objectives
At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  1. 1) optimally identify characteristics of pain to target proper prescribing
  2. 2) avoid inappropriate polypharmacy with opioids through alternate prescribing methodolog
  3. 3) recognize problematic opioid use (opioid misuse)
  4. 4) be able to implement simple screening processes for opioid use disorder and know how to refer to treatment
