This three-day course will be offered six times in 2020 (February 5-7, 2020, April 15-17, 2020, June 10-12, 2020, August 19-21, 2020, October 21-23, 2020, and November 18-20, 2020) in conference room 1107 in Oxford House at VUMC. The course is designed to help clinicians who have had problems associated with prescribing controlled substances improve their prescribing practices. After participating in Prescribing Controlled Substances, you should be able to describe and discuss current information on proper prescribing practices of controlled substances, how to recognize risky prescribing of controlled substances, strategies to avoid inappropriate prescribing behaviors, strategies for managing the drug-seeking patient, an approach to managing chemical dependency using SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral for Treatment), and how to access your state’s prescription drug monitoring program.


ACCME Objectives
  1. discuss current information on proper prescribing practices of controlled substance
  2. recognize risky prescribing of controlled substances
  3. describe strategies to avoid inappropriate prescribing behaviors
  4. discuss strategies for managing the drug-seeking patient
  5. manage patient chemical dependency using SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral for Treatment)
  6. access state prescription drug monitoring program

ANCC Learning Outcomes
  1. report increased knowledge regarding prescribing practices for controlled substances as demonstrated by course evaluation results.
