AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (2.50 hours), Non-Physician Attendance (2.50 hours)

BeHIP training provides pediatric healthcare providers with tools to screen for, assess, and manage patients with emotional, behavioral, and/or substance abuse issues.

In this second phase of BeHIP, participants will focus on understanding adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and their impact upon chronic disease and mental health conditions; learn about the Department of Children's Services, using the Tennessee system as an example; focus on appropriate psychopharmacology for pediatric behavioral health conditions; and learn about motivational interviewing techniques.

Module 1: Trauma and Early Brain Development – an introduction to trauma and early brain development.  In this course Dr. Patti van Eys will discuss the alarmingly negative impact of trauma and its consequential toxic stress on the early developing brain.

Module 2:  Trauma-Competent Care in the Primary Setting – addresses the background, principles and key tools for improving care for children and families who are or who have experienced traumatic stress.  Dr. Humberd and Dr. van Eys will discuss the basic precepts primary care providers need to understand trauma-competent care in the pediatric primary care setting.

Module 3:  Psychopharmacology – reviews the recommended treatments for common pediatric behavioral health concerns.  Dr. Fiscus will discuss specific pharmacolgical interventions for the more common behavioral health issues versus when to refer your patients for outside help.

Module 4:  Motivational Interviewing – reviews the technique and method of motivational interviewing, a client centered directive method for enhancing intrinsic motivation to change/explore resolving ambivalence.

Module 5:  Working with Children and Families in the Child Welfare System – reviews information pertaining to the Child Welfare System which should facilitate your care of children and youth at risk or in state custody.
