Designed for practicing general surgeons (and those in training), Surgery Morbidity and Mortality Conference offers an educational session focused on complications that have occurred within the department. Residents present and faculty discuss recent complications (morbidities) and deaths (mortalities) that have occurred in patients on all general surgical services. Each week, 2 services present their cases to the entire faculty and resident team (including medical students). This is rotated so that all Department of Surgery services present about once every 6 weeks.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Describe and discuss improved and earlier recognition, evaluation and management of various complications that might arise after operations.
  2. Describe and discuss evidence-based management strategies for dealing with various complications.
  3. Emphasize the importance of enhanced communicational skills as a means to reduce risk of complications.
  4. This discussion allows the team (faculty, residents and students) to learn from the past in hopes of improving future patient care and outcomes.
