AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (1.00 hours), Non-Physician Attendance (1.00 hours)

Once you have completed all content and the required event evaluation, credit will be immediately available on your transcript and a certificate will be available for download.

This course is available to VUMC employees only.

Opioid medications can provide relief for patients suffering from acute and chronic pain. Because there is the possibility that some patients could become addicted to opioid medications, opioids must be prescribed thoughtfully and patients who receive opioid prescriptions must be monitored regularly. This learning activity provides information about strategies for managing patients who require opioids for pain relief and opportunities to interact with patient cases to learn how these strategies can be applied in practice.

Effective July 1, 2014, all prescribers who hold a current DEA license and who prescribe controlled substances are required by the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners to complete a minimum of two hours of prescribing CME credit.  A total of forty (40) CME credits are required for physician re-licensure.  All credits must be earned in the two years prior to renewal.  This course satisfies one of the State's two prescribing CME credit requirements.

All content was reviewed for accuracy and relevance in January, 2024 by Hayley Rector, PharmD, BCPS, Heather Jackson, PhD, APRN, FNP-BC, NEA-BC, FAANP, and Tyler Barrett, MD.  The activity was renewed with no changes to any content or resources.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Prescribe opioids in compliance with Tennessee law
  2. Know how and when you can provide opioids for more than three (3) days
  3. Name the five (5) Vanderbilt Categories of Expected Pain Duration and how these align with Tennessee Opioid Prescribing Categories
  4. Learn what MME is and how to calculate it
  5. Find and print informed consent for opioid prescribing
  6. Provide accurate information to patients about Tennessee restrictions in opioid prescribing
