Attendees will be exposed to the personal, policy, practical and professional dimensions of care for the dying. Through a series of lectures, this activity invites attendees to see the connections between individual and collective attitudes towards dying and the wide-ranging effects these attitudes have on policy decisions and practices of care.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to: 

  1. Map and explore attitudes towards death & dying with the aim of promoting greater empathy for patients who face the prospect of their own death.
  2. Understand the historical role of Medicare, key public policy challenges, and new initiatives aimed at re-orienting EoL care to be more patient- and family-centered.
  3. Gain direct experience with advance care planning documentation and processes and consider the potential impact on the clinician-patient relationship.
  4. Understand importance of interdisciplinary teams in care of the dying and develop patient care and communication skills for patients approaching the end of their life.


Nursing Successful Completion Requirements:

Participants must be present for the entire activity in order to be eligible for contact hours.
