The annual Faculty Development Workshop is named in honor of Thomas A. Hazinski who is remembered for his dedication to the faculty and his desire to see that everyone had the tools needed to be a success at Vanderbilt. Dr. Hazinski received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1971, his medical degree from St. Louis University in 1975, and joined the Vanderbilt faculty in 1984. He was a Professor of Pediatrics and, built and directed the Division of Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine. He was a co-founder of Vanderbilt’s Master of Science in Clinical Investigation program. In 2004, he become the associate dean for Faculty Affairs, a newly created role which allowed him opportunity to work on issues impacting the faculty, many of which have been topics of discussion in this annual workshop. About the Hazinski Workshop The workshop is an annual half-day conference on a chosen topic related to faculty development. The program consists of a keynote lecture, complemented by interactive workshops in varying formats. Recent topics covered include: conflict resolution/communication, mentoring strategies and development of educator tools. Please join us for the 2019 Thomas A. Hazinski Faculty Development Workshop, “The Teacher Within: Nurturing and Developing Teaching Skills from Students to Leaders.” This half-day workshop will focus on issues in clinical education and will look at the variety of settings in which clinical teaching takes place. The workshop will be organized in two sections: Keynote: 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m., 208 Light Hall Teri Turner, MD, MEd, MPH, Professor of Pediatrics and Vice Chair of Education at Baylor College of Medicine and Director of the Center for Research, Innovation, and Scholarship in Medical Education at Texas Children’s Hospital, will present on educational strategies to enhance teaching effectiveness in the clinical setting, teaching methods that fit the diverse needs of learners, and will discuss lessons learned from faculty members in the clinical setting. Breakout Sessions: 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.; 2:40 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., 4th Floor Light Hall Participants will have the opportunity to attend two breakout sessions of their choosing. Breakout session options include the following: (a) Small and Large Group Teaching, (b) Clinical Teaching, (c) Assessment, (d) Designing Learning, (e) Learning Leadership, and (f) Teaching with Technology. A breakout registration email will be sent following your RSVP confirmation. A wine and cheese reception will occur from 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. in Light Hall, North Lobby. Participants are encouraged to network with senior leaders, presenters, and other attendees.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to: 

  1. Describe and discuss characteristics of learning environments in the medical center that support learning in the clinical setting
  2. Compare and contrast learning strategies for the clinical setting that were covered in sessions that you attended
  3. Identify a learning strategy that you can use to enhance your teaching practice
