Specialties - Medicine, Nursing, Pediatrics

AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (50.00 hours), Non-Physician Attendance (50.00 hours)

The Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics Mini-Fellowship is designed to enhance the health care knowledge and patient care skills that pediatric health care professionals have for managing patients with common developmental and behavioral problems, including language and motor delays, intellectual disability, autism, learning disabilities, ADHD, and other behavioral problems. The standard of care in this field is that health care professionals use a practical, evidence-based approach to identifying children with these medical concerns, including soliciting critical aspects of the history and physical examination, completing appropriate diagnostic and evaluation studies that can be performed by a generalist and other healthcare professionals, and requesting the necessary interventions and referrals that a generalist and other healthcare professionals should initiate for developmental disabilities. This educational experience will help participants attain the competencies required to attain this standard of care. In addition, they will develop competency in understanding how various healthcare professionals evaluate and care for children with developmental disabilities. Since early intervention has been shown to improve developmental outcomes, particular emphasis will be placed on developmental screening during well-child visits, including training on the STAT-MD. Participants will learn how to utilize websites for family resources and support groups for their patients and their families. Finally, participants will identify appropriate ways to communicate their concerns about their patients’ development and behavior with families. Throughout the experience the family-centered care approach for providing comprehensive care to children with developmental disabilities will be modeled.

Objectives
After participating in this CME activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Evaluate and manage patients with common developmental concerns, including global developmental delay, autism, intellectual disability, learning disabilities, and ADHD and other behavioral concerns.
  2. Access useful web-based family resources and support groups in their communities for children with developmental disabilities and their families.
  3. Provide early screening for developmental disorders to facilitate early intervention, including STAT-MD.
  4. Incorporate the family-centered care approach to children with developmental disabilities into their clinical practice
  5. Include various healthcare professionals in the care of children with developmental disabilities.
