Online course providing training of actions, attitudes, and words healthcare providers can adopt to destigmatize opioid use disorders, and motivational interviewing tools healthcare providers can use to foster a collaborative partnership with patients that results in the patient taking action steps to improve the patient's healthcare outcome.


Objectives
After participating in this CME activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe and discuss motivational interviewing and why is it is useful in caring for patients.
  2. Describe and discuss the stages of change per the transtheoretical model and what defines each stage.
  3. Describe and discuss the difference between motivational interviewing and manipulation.
  4. Describe and discuss the core motivational interviewing skills (OARS) and how to implement them in participant's practice.
  5. Describe and discuss what contributes to stigma and the impact that using stigmatic language has.
  6. Describe and discuss phrases to use that removes stigma and bias from your language when addressing the care of a patient with OUD or OEN.
  7. Describe and discuss that stigmatizing language is sometimes used by healthcare providers to distance the healthcare provider from their patients and the need to watch for this as a sign or symptom of burnout.
