The conference provides an opportunity to review the latest evidence about diagnosing and managing patients with presenting symptoms that may be characteristic of intellectual or development disabilities, review applicability to patients seen at MCJ Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital and its clinics, and discuss strategies for integration into practice.


ACCME Objectives
  1. Discuss recent literature related to identification and management of developmental disabilities in children and adolescents
  2. Identify a strategy related to reducing care disparities for families from racial/ethnic minority groups to incorporate into practice
  3. Explain the concept of neurodiversity to patients/families and determine when it is clinically indicated to do so
  4. List clinical indicators for use of telehealth with patients/families
  5. Identify peer-reviewed, evidence based literature and resources on topics related to neurodevelopmental disabilities that can be disseminated among colleagues and patients/families appropriately.

APA Objectives
  1. Describe the risk of reduced hearing seen for children who have autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and intellectual disability.
  2. List at least one gap in clinical care experienced by infants and children who have developmental disabilities in their access to a high-quality hearing evaluation.
  3. Identify two potential opportunities to improve referral pathways and hearing health care for children with developmental disabilities at VUMC.
