The Vanderbilt Women's Heart and Neurology Health Symposium is a one day, case-based educational program developed to strengthen clinician knowledge of cardiovascular and neurologic care of female patients. Expert faculty from multi-disciplinary backgrounds will provide the latest information relevant to care of the female patient across the life course. This educational event is well-suited for physicians and advance practice practitioners from specialties relevant to women’s heart health, including cardiology, neurology, internal medicine, family practice and OB/GYN. The first session will focus on preventive care of the female patient, with discussion of management of hypertension, primary prevention and medical weight loss in women. In the second and third sessions, breakout rooms will allows attendees to cardiovascular or neurologic choose learning pathways, with one session in each pathway centered on conditions predominantly affecting pre-menopausal women, and one session focused on conditions primarily affecting post-menopausal women. The final session will have include expert discussion on management of autonomic dysfunction, as well as up to date guidance on management of hormonal therapies in women with and at risk for cardiovascular and neurologic disorders. Panel discussions will provide for ample opportunity to ask questions. Lunch will be provided. CME and MOC credits will be offered.


Objectives
After participating in this educational activity, you should be able to:

  1. Identify key principles of care of geriatric women with cardiovascular disease
  2. Identify sex-specific risk factors for stroke
  3. Understand the unique concerns for stroke in women.
  4. Understand the contribution of ischemia with non-obstructive coronary arteries to chest pain in women
  5. Identify effective strategies for diagnosis of chest pain in women
  6. Understand sex-specific risk factors for cardiovascular disease in women
  7. Recognize the cardiovascular risks of common autoimmune disorders
  8. Understand principles of management of hypertension in women
  9. Identify pharmacologic and lifestyle modification interventions to improve autonomic dysfunction symptoms
  10. Risk stratify patients for use of commonly used contraceptive agents
  11. Understand the importance of lifelong specialized cardiovascular care for women with congenital heart disease
  12. Understand the benefits and risks of commonly used pharmacologic agents for medical weight loss
  13. Understand the approach to managing headaches throughout a women’s lifespan.
  14. Review the impact of menopause on sleep.
  15. Understand the management of epilepsy when planning for and throughout pregnancy.
  16. Review the impact of menopause on cognition
  17. Understand the approach to manage a patient with MS as they plan for and throughout pregnancy.
