This signature event will feature experts from Vanderbilt and around the region presenting on health issues affecting the LGBTQ community. As healthcare is more difficult to access in Southern states, the gathering is a great opportunity to connect and share available resources. Providers, trainees, students, and community members are encouraged to attend. Our 2021 symposium topics include foundational topics in LGBTQI healthcare, COVID-19 impacts on LGBTQI communities, legislative impacts on LGBTQI health service delivery, and surgical care for transgender patients.


Objectives
After participating in this education activity, you should be able to:

  1. Define common gender and sexuality terminology, including gender identity, gender expression, sex assigned at birth, sexual orientation, and romantic orientation.
  2. Explore the concept of the gender binary and its implications, as well as more inclusive gender models.
  3. Discuss health disparity trends within the LGBTQI population and its impact on queer and transgender individuals.
  4. Demonstrate the importance of inclusive communication and pronoun usage, including the use of they/them/theirs pronouns, within healthcare settings.
  5. Summarize best practice guidelines for assessment and treatment of LGBTQI patients.
  6. Identify and describe the health needs of LGBTQ populations
  7. Describe how the COVID-19 pandemic affected LGBTQ health
  8. Identify health needs of older LGBTQ adults during the pandemic
  9. Evaluate health policy and provider-based best practices for improving LGBTQ health.
  10. Consider how the current legislation and sociopolitical climate has affected LGBTQ youth on a local, state, and national level.
  11. Review data on the impact of the current sociopolitical climate on LGBTQ mental health with a brief overview of health disparities present in this patient population.
  12. Discuss concerns specific to youth of color who are in the LGBTQ community and how to be intentional advocates for this marginalized population.
  13. Identify strategies to advocate for patients/families, promote community engagement, and have a positive relationship with legislators to promote improved outcomes for LGBTQ children and adolescent
  14. Develop an action plan that each participant can employ to support, affirm, and/or advocate for LGBTQ youth.
  15. Identify the departments within Vanderbilt who care for our gender diverse patient population as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  16. Identify and describe the trans-feminizing procedures performed at Vanderbilt
  17. Identify and describe the trans-masculinizing procedures performed at Vanderbilt
  18. Identify the WPATH guidelines which must be met prior to undergoing gender affirming surgery at Vanderbilt.
  19. Discuss the typical post-operative course for the gender affirming patient
  20. Describe U.S. HIV-related inequities
