This activity will be focused on appropriateness of outpatient antibiotic prescribing for otitis media, sinusitis, S. pharyngitis, community-acquired pneumonia, and skin & soft tissue infections for adults and pediatric patients. It will also focus on case-based examples of guideline-concordant (and discordant) antibiotic selection. Additionally, it will include communication skills training and recommended interventions for improving antibiotic prescribing.


Objectives
After participating in this educational activity, you should be able to:

  1. Understand infectious indications that require or do not require prescription of antibiotics
  2. Describe a communication strategy to discuss antibiotic prescribing with patients
  3. Understand appropriate antibiotic or non-pharmacologic treatment regimens for patients with infectious diseases
  4. Discuss incidence of inappropriate prescriptions for upper respiratory infections

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 1.00 Medical Knowledge (Part II) MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.
