The Vanderbilt Health Coaching Program is designed for licensed health care professionals who wish to either practice as independent health coaches, or who wish to add health coaching skills to their current role to better enable their patients to self-manage their health and optimize wellness. The program activity covers the live training portions of Phase I starting 4.10.2023. Phase I is an intensive 8 month educational program with over 26 online learning modules, two 3-day weekend intensives, weekly practice calls with peers, group skills calls, and a personal change project. Our course is offered in a modified distance format. On 4.10, 2023, Faculty join bi-weekly practice calls, which include two other trainees, to provide tailor mentorship midway through Phase I. In addition, there are 2 group skills calls where trainees participate in large group discussion and apply the skills in faculty-mentored small groups. Intensive #2 is the second instance of a 3-day virtual intensive during Phase I. They are scheduled to occur Friday-Sunday in order for trainees to fully attend to and implement their learnings from Phase I. The second intensive includes two faculty-mentored triad practice sessions where the trainee participates in a follow-up session with a "new client". In addition, the trainees skills are evaluated using the HCI 3.0 tool in a simulated coaching session with an SP (and clinical case). If the trainees skills meet 'client-centered' standards in the Practical Skills Assessment (PSA), they are candidates to move forward into the Phase II/Practicum portion of the training. The trainee also presents a "personal change project" during Intensive #2, where they share their learnings from the "client experience" portion of coaching with their Cohort, as well as identify key theories and learnings as they apply to Phase I asynchronous objectives.

Objectives
After participating in this educational activity, you should be able to:

  1. Describe and discuss the role of a health coach in helping patients achieve and maintain optimal health
  2. Describe and discuss approaches for incorporating a health coaching approach in clinical practice
  3. Describe and discuss health coaching structure and process of the follow up session
  4. Describe and discuss fundamental concepts and theories underlying health coach practice
