Vanderbilt's 86th Temporal Bone Course will be directed by Dr. Kareem Tawfik. The course will feature live lectures presenting on topics including: • Anatomy of the temporal bone • Surgery for chronic ear disease • Cochlear implants • Management of sudden sensorineural hearing loss • Image-guided surgery in otology • Advanced radiology techniques in otology • Osseointegrated implants • Audiology and vestibular diagnostic techniques • Ossicular reconstruction • Stapedectomy • Management of acoustic tumors • Surgery for vertigo • Skull base approaches to the temporal bone • Endoscopic ear surgery The course will also include the following procedures demonstrated/performed live (dissection portion): • Intact canal wall mastoidectomy • Facial recess and extended facial recess • Endolymphatic sac decompression • Facial nerve identification • Canal wall down mastoidectomy • Labyrinthectomy • Middle cranial fossa approach • Translabyrinthine approach to the skull base • Transcochlear approach to the skull base • BAHA implant techniques


Objectives
After participating in this educational activity, you should be able to:

  1. Describe and discuss basic and applied anatomy of the temporal bone
  2. Describe and discuss evidence-based approaches to otologic evaluation and diagnosis, including use of the endoscope
  3. Describe and discuss evidence-based approaches to surgical management of ear disease, chronic ear disease, and ventilation pathways
  4. How to practice new evidence-based surgical techniques in the dissection laboratory
