The Pediatric Pulmonary Morbidity, Mortality, and Improvement (MM&I) Conference offers an educational session and discussion forum to emphasize safe and high-quality patient care as part of the clinical care mission of the Division of Pediatric Allergy, Immunology, and Pulmonary Medicine at VUMC. In this conference, we review patient cases or situations that occurred in the inpatient or outpatient settings and focus on systems-based problems. The conference includes representation from all faculty, trainees, nursing, and other health care and administrative staff from the Division, and seeks to provide objective, nonjudgmental review of adverse outcomes in order to positively affect real process change. The main objective(s) of this conference are: 1) to review adverse events, near-miss events, or complications that might have occurred during patient care, 2) to perform a structured root-cause analysis of the potential causes that led to these events, 3) to discuss strategies to improve the earlier recognition, evaluation, and management of these events, and 4) to emphasize system-based changes that can be applied to prevent these events. This discussion will allow us to learn from the past in hopes of improving future patient care and outcomes.
